Target Audience for Main Task

Gender

For a news bulletin, there shouldn't be any male or female based news, and the bulletin should be made with both genders in mind. The main task of the bulletin would be to provide news on a local basis, and thus will not be aimed with just one gender in mind. Different stories may attract different groups of people, but generally a news bulletin is uni-sex.

Age group

Generally a news bulletin would be targetted at the 30 plus, and I would therefore try and make mine fit this age range. The news stories should therefore be aimed at this age group, and would therefore include important local news from the Channel Island area. The news should take a formal format in order to attract the 30 plus age range, as the formal nature of the news would attract more from this target group.

Interests

In order to target the 30 plus age range, the news broadcast should be informative and formal, whilst providing factual stories on a local basis. The stories should be centered around being aimed at this audience, however, other important news stories should be covered even if it may not appeal to the specified target audience. For example, a major news story in Jersey, is the fact that the band The Kooks will be headlining the JerseyLive music festival. Whilst this may not be directly appealing to the target audience of a news bulletin, I shall still include it as it is a big story within the island.

Market Research
In order to find out what sort of news people are most interested in, it was important for me to carry out some research into this area.

The results were:
Type of News Percentage
Current Affairs 27%
Politics 10%
Sport 19%
Local News 28%
World Events 11%
Weather 5%

My news broadcast should contain examples of all these topics, however the ones most people want to hear about are Current Affairs, Local News and sport. Therefore these will be the main subjects of my news broadcast.
