My thoughts and feeling on the project
Evaluation of Main Project
1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
My main audio project develops follows and number of the standard forms and conventions of a radio news broadcast. I have used the standard structure of an opening jingle followed by the headlines, which are then reported in more detail, this gives listeners an idea, and basic roundup of the stories that will be discussed. After the main news, I then have the sports section, which gives all the latest sports news, similar to that of a standard news broadcast. The broadcast the closes with a short weather summary and a faded out closing jingle. In this case, the structure of my radio show is similar to that of any other radio show, however, I did choose to make a few changes, mainly in the jingle, which I decided to make more up-tempo and electronic in an attempt to intrigue listeners, I felt this was particularly important for a local news station in order to attract listeners, and make them listen to the rest of the broadcast. I also made my jingle relatively short so that the news could be straight the point. I then spoke as the presenter in a clear and serious tone, in the manner that a news broadcast should be delivered. I decided that I shouldn’t try and change the standard codes and conventions of the radio news broadcast too much, as the standard structure is a tried and tested routine, and people who want to find out about the news wouldn’t be too interested in a news broadcast that challenged stereotypical news programming. A standard news broadcast is meant to deliver the news rather than focus on being different, and so in terms of challenging the forms and conventions of real media products, my audio project doesn’t do anything drastically different to other media products. The news needed to have a serious tone and it is a serious matter, and so attempting to challenge conventions may have had an adverse affect as it may have directed attention away from the main topic of the news.
2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My research showed that my broadcast should be aimed at the 30 plus target audience as these are the people that listen to the news on a far more regular basis. Other than that, the news should appeal to both genders and people of any social background, as it is an informative service. In order to try and appeal to this age range, it was important that my news bulletin was serious, and covered a variety of topics and important current issues. The stories that were covered needed to relevant to the local society, and therefore all my stories were locally based. I also did this as there are a number of different radio programs that offer UK based or world news, but there are very few that present local news in the island of Jersey. There was a need to cover the main stories, as well as sport throughout the island, as a number of people suggested that they were most interested in the sporting events. This meant that I had a relatively long sport section, in order to match the wants of the public. My media product therefore represents the 30 plus age group quite well.
3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
A local radio station would be most likely to distribute my media product, for example, my news broadcast could take place within the Channel 103 station, which is the local radio station in the island. My broadcast could fit in to the constraints of the broadcasting station, whilst also allowing for longer, more in-depth news analysis, as this broadcast is only five minutes long. It is possible, however, that a national radio station could distribute my news program, in a ‘news in your area’ section, which I know have been featured within BBC programming. My radio show could fit into any radio program for a news feature, as a roundup of the news, the fills a break within the standard radio show. For example, my radio show could be broadcast within the middle of the morning show as a break from the music and banter that is normally present, and this would also give listeners and idea as to the goings on within the island. Essentially, any radio station could pick up my radio broadcast and broadcast it as a news program for the island, but most likely it would come from a local based radio organisation, as the listeners on this show would be most interested in island life.
4) Who would be the audience for your media product?
The target audience for my media product would be the within the 30 plus age range, as these are the people who regularly listen to the news to keep up to date with the local stories. This broadcast would most likely be played throughout the day, and therefore may target workers within offices, who may be more likely to be listening to the radio whilst at work. My radio program doesn’t target a specific gender, as the news is designed to be informative and factual in providing the latest stories in a specific area, and therefore would not target any one gender. My radio broadcast may be slightly aimed more towards the ABC1 category of people, however, as a news bulletin shouldn’t be aimed at any one class of people, I also feel that a number of people within the C2DE category could also listen to my radio program. The research I gathered suggested that it was the 30 plus age bracket that I should target with my media product, and not any specific gender or class, and this is therefore what I have tried to create in not looked to target a specific group, as the news generally has a fairly wide appeal and a mass audience.
5) How did you attract/address your audience?
Attracting the audience for the broadcast was something that had to be carefully considered and I looked at doing this in a number of different ways. I attempted to attract my audience by maintaining a serious tone throughout. I knew that it would be very important to have interesting stories combined with a serious nature in order to attract my target audience for the broadcast. In order to address my audience I knew that the news program would need to be informative, and this is something that I did by featuring a number of local stories that would interest the local population. Whilst maintaining a serious tone, I also felt that having a reasonably laid-back style would help in attracting the audience as this would create a calming effect. It was also incredibly important that the dialogue could be easily understood otherwise the effectiveness of the news show would be non-existent, so I spoke in a clear manner, and used radio equipment in order to maintain clarity of speech. I also felt that including Sound FX and musical interludes between stories would help to attract the audience as this would also give the show a more relaxed feel, and therefore easier to listen to, rather than someone just dictating the news.
6) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
I feel that I have learnt a lot from the completion of this audio task. I have never been that confident at using apple Mac computers and the programs that are featured on it, however, this is something I feel I have improved through the completion of the task. I have learnt to use GarageBand more efficiently, and the editing techniques required to make a smooth broadcast. I have also learnt the importance of using the technology available to create a good radio show. Another key skill I have learnt from this task is the ability to use the radio equipment we have available to us. This was great use in the completion of this task, as it aided me greatly in being able to complete the task. This equipment was incredibly easy to use as it turned out. Overall, I feel I have increased my skills greatly through the completion of this task, and this I would look to improve my skills throughout the course of future tasks.
7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
I feel that my main project is far superior to the one I made in the preliminary task, particularly as my main task was a far greater project. In my preliminary task I only needed to create a short jingle and a 30 second or so clip of someone talking, whilst the project needed to be a full five minutes in duration. I feel that the overall standard is far better, and that the quality of the editing and sound is greater in the main task. I still feel that there are a few flaws with my main task, however, when compared with my preliminary task, this one is far superior. My understanding of the programs used was better for the main project, and this therefore meant that the overall standard of my project improved. When creating the preliminary task, I was learning to use the programs and equipment for the first time, whilst in this instance, I had become more familiar with the equipment I was using. I also understood the concepts of a radio show far better in this task, and in understanding the concepts better, this gave me more option to change around with them a bit in an attempt to make a better and more well-rounded broadcast.
Audience Feedback
The majority of people asked said that my radio show was fairly good, and had a proffesional sound to the broadcast, mainly due to the clearness of the speech from within the recording studio. The main issues that people had was with the jingle, suggesting that the jingle may not have been either long enough, and sound enough like an opening to a news broadcast. However, the general comments recieved for the broadcast were positive, and said that the piece fitted together well, and that the final product wasn't dissimilar to something that would be heard on a regular radio braodcast. I had originally used different sound FX to seperate each of the main headlines, so when I originally asked for audience feedback, this was one of the main issues people had with the project, saying that the sound FX i had used were to upbeat and didn't fit in with the nature of the broadcast. I changed this in order to try and make the sound FX fit more seemlessly into the piece, and on the subsequent feedback, most people said that it was a great improvement from the original, and that these new sound FX were far more effective in the radio news show environment in which it was placed.

Radio Show : The Making of
For the outside voice recordings, I used a standard voice recorder, this helped in giving the outdoors impression, as it picked up some background noise, whilst also giving the impression of asking people on the street.
In order to piece the broadcast together, I used the GarageBand program, as this meant that I could view a number of different tracks, and edit them together so that the news broadcast made sense. The GarageBand program aided me in making progress with my radio braodcast, as I could similtaneously run all the different tracks and recordings that I had, and then edit it together so that it all ran as one continuous and smooth broadcast.

In order to make the jingle for the news program, I used a combination of prerecorded sounds on the program, as well as inputting some of my own sounds using the keyboard function. My aim for the jingle was to keep it relatively short, so as to go straight into the news, whilst also making the jingle interesting, without being too up-tempo. I found it difficult to piece together the jingle to make it sound as a news jingle should. The instruments within the program made it difficult for the jingle to have a more formal style, yet I didn't want the jingle to sound like a morning news show. In order to make the jingle, I used a basic drum beat, and a couple of radio sounds, that are not dissimilar to that of a radio jingle. I kept the jingle very short, as I'd planned, in order to get straight into the news, and not have listeners zoning out on the jingle.

In order to piece the different recordings together, I used the split function. This meant that I could split each recording at a certain point, and get rid off any bits that were either unneccessary to the running order of the show, or were wrong. This meant that I could piece together different takes from different recordings, whilst still sychronising the recording elements together, so that the broadcast ran smoothly.
Following the GarageBand production of my radio broadcast, I needed to export the file and format it so that it all played on one file. I did this by selecting the 'export to disc' option of GarageBand, and then choosing to make the file an mp3 format.

Today’s top story, Jersey’s health minister has apologised unreservedly for swearing in a states chamber meeting at a fellow politician. Perchard is claimed to have directed “unstatesmanlike" language towards Senator Stuart Syvret. Senator Syvret claimed the Minister told him to "go and top himself", something Senator Perchard continues to deny, however, Perchard has admitted to saying something undignified in the states chamber. Perchard was unavailable for comment, and the outcome of this incident is still yet unknownm however, inquests will be made into the nature of these comments.
The headliners for Jersey Live music festival have been announced. The Kooks will close the Sunday of the festival which takes place of the 4th and 5th of September. The Kooks will join Basement Jaxx on the bill, who will be headlining the Saturday night. The rest of the lineup is yet to be confirmed, but we spoke to people about this announcement and gathered their opinions of the headline acts that will be playing Jersey’s biggest event.
(Vox Box, speak to three or four people, getting their opinions on this announcement)
The row surrounding the pharmacist who refuses to dispense the Morning-after pill based on religious beliefs has increased. Many women were left furious that they were not able to acquire the pill from the pharmacy. The pharmacist in question could now face charges of professional misconduct. The Island’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr Rosemary Gellar, had this to say
(Clip of person talking: The emergency contraceptive pill MUST be available seven days a week, regardless of religion)
Durrell, Jersey’s wildlife conservation trust has once again come to the aid of an endangered species, the mountain chicken. This breed of frog, which can be found on the Caribbean island of Montserrat, is becoming increasingly wiped out by a deadly fungal disease. Durrell staff hope to bring a healthy group of this species back to Island for breeding purposes.
That’ all on today’s headlines, I’ll now pass you over to our sports correspondent, Barnaby Orr.
Barney now speaks
Thanks Mike
The Island’s football season is drawing to a close, with three teams still battling for the league title. Trinity, St Paul’s and St Brelade’s are all still in the running for the title after all three gained hard-fought victories at the weekend. Trinity came from a goal down to beat First Tower 2-1, and St Paul’s and St Brelade’s both won 1-0 against Jersey Wanderers and St Peter’s respectively. Those wins mean that there are just 2 points separating the three teams, with four games left to go.
Jersey’s rugby club stretched their unbeaten streak to four games. They won on Saturday 24 points to 17, that win now puts Jersey in second place in the table, fighting for promotion.
In Cricket, Jersey Farmers thrashed the Centurians, winning by 124 runs. The shock result means that the Farmers have moved away from the relegation zone, whilst denting Centurians title aspirations.
That’s all from me with the sport, we’ll go back now to Michael Morris
I speak
Cheers Barney
Now for the weather report, today’s weather will be fair, but cloudy, with temperatures reaching a maximum of 13 degrees Celsius.
Thanks for listening to me, Michael Morris; I’ll be back in an hour with a more in-depth news round-up.

Applications I will use
For the voice recordings I will use the radio equipment we have available to us, as this will offer a clarity of speech and make the dialogue sound more professional. For the outside recordings, I will use a standard voice recorder as this is easy to transport and gain the outside broadcasts that I need. This piece of equipment will also mean that these particular sections of the broadcast will sound like they have been recorded outside, making the overall piece sound far more believable and realistic.

Features of the broadcast
Opening Jingle
This will include a very brief roundup of the headlines that will be discussed in the show, as well as offering an opening to the radio broadcast
Current Affairs
This will be a normal news presenter that will inform listeners about the main stories, giving in depth details about the nature of each off the main stories
Vox pop
This will be included within the current affair section, where the presenter will pass over to a correspondant who will be asking questions of the general public, based on a certain news story.
Sports Correspondant
This will feature all the sports news, as the sports specialist will give details about the island's sporting stories.
Weather
This will include infomation regarding the tides and surfing conditions off the island, as well as the standard weather infomation.
Summary
This will be concluded by the main presenter who will offer a short round-up of the stories that had previously been discussed.
Closing Jingle
This will be similar if not the same to the opening jingle, this will be the rounding up and closing to the news bulletin.
Timescale
Given that this is just a 5 minute broadcast is important to be brief, whilst covering the stories. The estimated time for each section should therefore be around this:
Opening Jingle - 10-15 seconds
Main News Headlines and coverage of the stories 2 - 3 minutes (The main headlines will include the vox pops and interviews relating to a specific story
Sport - 1 - 1 1/2 minutes
Summary and weather - 30 Seconds
Closing Jingle - 5 seconds
Aims of my news program

Target Audience for Main Task
For a news bulletin, there shouldn't be any male or female based news, and the bulletin should be made with both genders in mind. The main task of the bulletin would be to provide news on a local basis, and thus will not be aimed with just one gender in mind. Different stories may attract different groups of people, but generally a news bulletin is uni-sex.
Age group
Generally a news bulletin would be targetted at the 30 plus, and I would therefore try and make mine fit this age range. The news stories should therefore be aimed at this age group, and would therefore include important local news from the Channel Island area. The news should take a formal format in order to attract the 30 plus age range, as the formal nature of the news would attract more from this target group.
Interests
In order to target the 30 plus age range, the news broadcast should be informative and formal, whilst providing factual stories on a local basis. The stories should be centered around being aimed at this audience, however, other important news stories should be covered even if it may not appeal to the specified target audience. For example, a major news story in Jersey, is the fact that the band The Kooks will be headlining the JerseyLive music festival. Whilst this may not be directly appealing to the target audience of a news bulletin, I shall still include it as it is a big story within the island.
Market Research
In order to find out what sort of news people are most interested in, it was important for me to carry out some research into this area.
The results were:
Type of News Percentage
Current Affairs 27%
Politics 10%
Sport 19%
Local News 28%
World Events 11%
Weather 5%
My news broadcast should contain examples of all these topics, however the ones most people want to hear about are Current Affairs, Local News and sport. Therefore these will be the main subjects of my news broadcast.

Preliminary Evaluation
I feel that my radio show attracts my target audience quite well as the jingle and music played is fairly energetic, targeting a younger audience. The music played is also fairly new and up-to-date, also atracting the audience. The people who would listen to my show would generally be younger listeners, and maybe those on their way home from work. My radio show highlights new music and could be distrubuted by radio broadcasters like Radio1.
Completing the project has taught me how to use programs such as GarageBand and the radio technology that the school has to offer. The project also taught me how to follow the conventions of other radio shows in an attempt to attract different audiences.

Preliminary Making the Radio show

The different instuments down the left hand side are what I used to create the jingle, the different instruments work well together and show what type of show it is.
The blue strip along the bottom of the screen is what I used in order to equalise the sound so that the different sound fade in and out.
The Swirling Electric Piano sound is the backing track that plays whilst the presenter and guest are talking, and keeps going right up until the music starts.
I recorded the voices using the radio equipment in the media hut, and imported it to the file so that the whole clip could run as one sound file. I also used this as it is specifically used for recording radio shows and therefore would give a more professional and equalised sound. This allowed be to record the presenter and the guest talking to each other, as well as allowing the song to fade in whilst the presenter is intoducing it.
The archive clip is the song, that is relevant to the guest, as well as showing what the guest does. As the presenter I then introduce the song.
This is my finished preliminary project

Preliminary Analysis of Similar Media Texts
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00gqcdr/The_Chris_Moyles_Show_20_01_2009/
The opening to the Chris Moyles Show is quite laid back and quiet. The lyrics to the jingle tell you that it is a morning radio show, and therefore the music fits in nicely with this, as the laid back feel to the jingle makes it easy to listen to, as well as indicating that the show will not be to fast-paced and loud, and will gently ease you into the morning. This particular jingle is very long, and the lyrics are almost satirical, this highlights that the show will be light-hearted, aiming to make the listeners laugh, and that it is not a serious show. The jingle is a bit too long, as it is almost a minute and a half long, and the tune is repetitive and can get boring. Overall I feel this jingle is reasonably good at getting the point across as it highlights the unseriousness nature of the show, as well as showing the listeners that the early morning radio show will not be too loud.
Although not specifically a news show, the jingle for the Chris Moyles show shows how the jingle needs to fit in with the style of the radio show, and therefore my news jingle will need to be more serious rather than this which is far more light-hearted, as fits the style of the show.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00gklm4/Scott_Mills_14_01_2009/
This opening to the Scott Mills show is very high paced and gives the impression that this show will me more high paced in its content. The intro shows that the show will be playing popular music, aimed at people coming home from work. The opening to this show makes people sit up and take notice of it as it is so high paced. The opening here is far different to that of the Chris Moyles show, as this show attempts to aim to get listeners on their way home from work, the high tempo of this intro shows this as people are generally in a better mood having left work, and the listeners are more willing to listen to the fast paced radio show, as apposed to the morning show. This is a good intro to a radio show, as the listeners become interested, as well as appealing to those who are coming home after leaving work. In this instance, the jingle leads right into a song, making people listen straight away, even without an introduction from the presenter.
Similarly to the Chris Moyles show, this is not specifically as news broadcast, but it does offer insight as to how a jingle needs to ft in with the themes of the show. There is a news section within this show which maintains a similar dance music orientated beat, however it is a lower tempo than the opening jingle of the show. In order to fit in with my main task though, a similar jingle to the news section can be used. I like the idea of making the jingle reasonably funky so as to sound interesting and introduce the news broadcast.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/zanelowe/zanedeps/2009/biffyclyro.shtml
The Zane Lowe Takeovers show is short, and get right to the point. The Sound FX show it to be a cool show, aimed at young people. The opening also gives infomation about the show, teling the listeners that special guests will be taking over the show. The short introduction to the show indicates that the show will be simple, and good music. This intro is good as it get straight to the point and tells the listeners what will be happening in the show in brief.
The simplicity and short length of the jingle is a good technique to use, as it get straight to the point, yet it still gives an introduction to the broadcast. This particular broadcast is not a news show of any form, however, it does offer some ideas about the codes and conventions of a jingle, and that a shorter jingle can sometimes be more effective as it keeps it brief and gets straight to the point of the show.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/news24
This is a news channel, and therefore is very helpful in understading the nature of a news broadcast. This show is very structured and has a serious tone, similar to something that I will need to create for my radio show. The serious tone of the radio channel tells listeners that the topics of discusion will therefore be serious and fact-based.
This show is similar to the one I would need to try and create. The show is very professional, and get important infomation to its listeners. The only thing I would like to change from this format would be the seriousness of it. Whilst my broadcast needs to be serious, I feel that this show is possibly too serious, particularly as I am looking to create a 5 minute local news bulletin. I therefore feel that a more listener-friendly style would be applicable for a local broadcast.
Channel 103
This is the local radio station in the island, and therefore exactly like the sort of news broadcast I would need to create. The jingle is short and reasonably light-hearted, whilst also being able to give the impression of a news show, with its Sound FX and instruments used for the jingle. The presenter here had a more laid back style compared to that of News24, given the local nature of the broadcast.
This radio show is the most similar to what I will attempt to create. A mixture of this broadcast with the News24 broadcast would be ideal, as this has the laid back local attitude, whilst News24 has the serious tone that the news requires.
